How much thought do you give to the cleaning products you use?
I’ll admit it. Up until now, I bought whatever was on offer. I figured something sold as a “domestic household” product would be safe, right?
Apparently domestic household products can be some of the most toxic things in your home. Many domestic cleaning products are not only harmful to humans but also to the environment.
Do you want to know what is even more surprising? This doesn’t need to be the case!
So, how toxic are your household products?
If you are interested to know in detail, this website is a good place to start. However, to fill you in on some basic facts, some synthetic chemicals found in common household products are known carcinogens linked to breast cancer. Many cleaning products also contain ingredients that can cause harmful respiratory effects. They include common antibacterial agents such as sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) and quaternary ammonium compounds also known as “quats.”
On top of that, the plastic used for household cleaning products are not always recyclable. The damage that plastic is wreaking on the environment is well documented, but you can read some objective facts on it here.
Unfortunately there are further ways that your usual household cleaning products do damage to the environment and your health, but the purpose of this post isn’t to freak people out. If you’d like to read on further, you can find a lot of reliable information here.
As I mentioned in my recent article “Green Parenting: We’ve got the whole world in our hands” I have been trying to find small ways to become more environmentally friendly. Although I have to confess, I was deterred by the fact that ecological products normally cost more. I also imagined that they would be less effective. However the Waitrose ECOlogical range found at Eroski Gibraltar is affordable (prices start from £1.75), and what’s more, it’s just as effective as my other cleaners, with the bonus of smelling bright and fresh too.
The whole range is 100% British, plant based, biodegradable, cruelty free and comes in recyclable packaging. The products are fragranced with scents such as Camomile & Waterlily, Watermint & Sage, and Grapefruit & Eucalyptus.
Interested to try the products out for yourself? There has never been a better time. Eroski Gibraltar are offering at least 10% off the Eco Range until 30th September 2016. What’s more, they have several other ranges of ecological and organic household products such as “Frosch Ecologico”, “Faith in Nature” and “L’arbre Vert”.
Would you like to WIN the ECOlogical range as pictured above? To get your hands on an ECOlogical Goody Bag courtesy of Eroski Gibraltar, enter our Facebook competition. The winner will be announced on Friday 30th September 2016.**
